Bridge Inspections Program

CSI is involved with two concurrent contracts on the Bridge Inspections Program for the GDOT. The contracts encompass the inspection of over 50 bridges located statewide. Bridges include off-systems and on-system structures. Complexities of the bridges vary from simple spans to multiple spans, concrete to steel, roadway crossings to waterway crossings, and use of snooper or bucket trucks.

Responsibilities include identifying bridge conditions and deficiencies through detailed and comprehensive bridge inspection which generates a Bridge Inspection Report per GDOT and NBIS standards/criteria, and input of findings into the GDOT BIMS Database.

Bridge Service Program (SFWMD)

CSI implemented the Bridge Service Program for the SFWMD which owns approximately 66 stand-alone bridges. Responsibilities included: identifying bridge conditions and deficiencies through a detailed and comprehensive bridge inspection that generates a Bridge Inspection Report and load ratings for all the bridges; provide planning and conceptual design to identify design alternatives and criteria for selected bridges in need of replacement; develop Maintenance Construction Design packages for those bridges identified to only require minor repairs and construction; develop Detailed Bridge Design packages for repair or replacement to correct structural deterioration that may present an on-going safety hazard or potential failure of the structure; calculate load ratings of water control structure service bridges.

Tower Inspection Surveys

The SFWMD Operations Control & Hydro Data Management Department sends and receives telemetry information from fifty-six (56) microwave towers located throughout sixteen (16) Florida counties from Osceola to Monroe. The Department’s mission, in part, is to “manage the infrastructure that remotely operates District water control structures through supervisory control and data acquisition systems, and provide operations and hydro meteorological data.” To ensure an uninterrupted flow of this telemetry information, the existing microwave towers require periodic maintenance. The Tower Inspection Surveys will help the District determine what maintenance is required and to budget and prioritize the repairs. Types of Towers include Guyed and Self Supported. Challenges included remote sites in Federal swamp lands in the midst of wild life.

To date, over three consecutive years, CSI has surveyed and inspected 35 Towers. The Tower Inspection Survey objectives are to:

  • Systematically inspect the District’s Microwave Towers for any latent damages that require mitigating repairs, and Report findings.
  • Rate the severity/criticality of the damage, and Prioritize repairs.
  • Provide recommendations for repair, and Provide estimates of costs for implementing the recommendations.

The inspections adhere to the following governing standards:

  1. TIA/EIA-222-G: Structural Standards for Steel Antenna Towers and Antenna Supporting Structures, pertaining Annex J and K.
  2. TIA/EIA-252: Standard Microwave Transmission Systems.
  3. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Rules and Regulations.
  4. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules and Regulations.
  5. Local Electrical, Building and Fire Codes.
